Change your focus for more Energy
What my grandmother and Pokémon GO taught me about overcoming fatigue
When it comes to fatigue, there’s a balance between knowing when to rest and restore, and when to push through. Trust yourself and listen to your body. Or, just trick yourself, focus on something you enjoy, and see what happens. You might be surprised at what you can accomplish!
When I visited my grandma in eastern Europe a few years ago, she taught me about the art of changing your focus.
There was a lot of family drama going on at the time. She would distract me from it like a pro so we could focus on what was really important – spending time together. It was amazing to watch it happen and to experience it.
I’d sit down in her living room and start talking about all the stressful things going on, and get really worked up about it. She’d realize it wasn’t useful for me to be stressed about things I had no control over. She’d distract me from it, and we’d proceed to spend the afternoon together. It was wonderful. Looking back, I’m so glad I had that time with her.
Fast-forward to this summer and the Pokémon GO craze.
I remember Pokémon from when I was growing up, and it turns out I love playing Pokémon GO. I love collecting things, learning about things, and achieving things. Even though it’s just a game, it energizes me!
I’ve also always enjoyed walking the Pembroke Waterfront path.
I find it calming, energizing, and I love listening to the sounds of nature and taking it all in visually. I love taking the time to connect with my body and the present moment through my breathing and the rhythm of walking. We’re so fortunate to live where we do.
The thing is, I wouldn’t go walking every day. And, this summer I was really fatigued and burnt out.
When it came time to go walking, I’d tell myself excuses about how I had no energy, and I’d end up watching Netflix or checking e-mails.
Sometimes, I’d make it about a kilometer in total. But, I’d be so focused on feeling fatigued that I’d convince myself to turn around and come back after 500 meters. Yikes!
As a healthcare provider, I know that walking for half an hour a day has tremendous health benefits. And I truly enjoy it! It brings me joy, energizes me, and helps me clear my mind and think more creatively. So why was it so hard to get out there?
Pokémon GO has done two things for me.
It’s given me an excuse to get out the door 1-2 times per day for a walk consistently. And, it’s helped me focus on the game at times instead of getting wrapped up in stories about how fatigued I was. The amazing thing is, my energy has improved dramatically throughout the process as a side effect.
Do I love that I have my phone with me on nature walks? Not really. But, hey. One step at a time.
